Resilience

Three stages of getting through

Resilience is often described as bouncing back. In real life it rarely feels like bouncing. It feels more like three separate stages, each asking something different of you.

Getting through

The first stage is simply surviving it. Not fixing, not understanding, not growing. Making it through the day. When you are here, the goal is small: sleep, eat something, talk to one person, take the next step. This stage is not passive. It is often the bravest thing you will ever do, and it looks like nothing from the outside.

Rebuilding

Once the worst has passed, there is room to act. This is where you make changes, ask for help, learn what happened, and rebuild what broke. Rebuilding takes energy, which is why it can't be rushed while you are still just getting through.

Letting it go

The last stage is the one many people skip. Letting go doesn't mean forgetting or pretending it didn't matter. It means the event stops being the centre of your story. You carry it, but it no longer carries you.

Where are you stuck?

Most of us are naturally strong in one stage and weak in another. Some people get through hard years but never let themselves rebuild. Others fix everything quickly but never truly let go, and the old pain keeps coming back in new forms.

Look at something difficult in your life right now. Which of the three stages are you in? What would the next one ask of you?

If you are in the middle of something hard today, you are welcome to say so in the comments. You don't need to explain. Others here have been there too.
